The Oswego State wrestling opened its season with a solid outing in day one of the Ithaca College Invitational on Friday afternoon. Oswego racked up 32.5 team points to sit in second place out of 11 teams. The Lakers trailed only the host and nationally-ranked Bombers. Less than two points separate the second-through-fifth place squads, making Saturday's bouts crucial.
In all, Oswego has eight wrestlers who qualified for the quarterfinal round on the second day.
At 125, James Ronca and captain Kevin Ramkishun each excelled. Ronca defeated Chase Jefferys of Norwich University by a 16-0 technical fall. Ramkishun took a 7-5 decision over SUNY Sullivan's Dylan Booth.
Johnathan Ptacek went 3-1 at 133, earning a 4-2 decision in his first match before winning his third match by a fall at 1:53 and his fourth bout in a 13-6 decision.
In the 141-weight class, Jeffrey Jones won his battle with Jamiel Stapelton of Johnson & Wales with a 5-3 decision. Mark Milisci downed his opponent, Ricky Perrine of Stevens Institute of Technology, 4-2.
Abubakarr Sow picked up where we left off after last year, despite moving up at weight class to 157. Sow won two matches, both by fall, over NYU's Justin Martinez and Cole Cameron of Centenary College.
Oswego continued its success as Michael Peterson moved past Springfield College's Josh Hillman 11-7 at 174.
Saturday's bouts will begin at 10 a.m.
