Men's Basketball Battles to Close Loss at Oneonta

Men's Basketball Battles to Close Loss at Oneonta

The Oswego State men's basketball team took just its second SUNYAC loss of the season in a tough 68-64 road battle at Oneonta on Saturday afternoon. With the slip-up, the Lakers drop to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the league while the Red Dragons improve to 7-5, 3-3.

In the final minutes, Oswego trailed 59-54 but was able to string together a 6-0 run to regain an edge. That spurt included a Jamir Ferebee 3-pointer on nice ball movement between the senior, Liam Sanborn and Josh Ivey. A turnover with just 1:24 remaining allowed for an Oneonta fastbreak layup, however, and put the Lakers in foul mode. The Red Dragons capitalized by making seven of its eight attempts from the charity stripe in the last minute to seal the game.

It was truly a nip-and-tuck contest, as neither team held an advantage larger than seven the entire 40 minutes. In all, each team held leads on four different occasions while the game was knotted several times.

Three Lakers were in double figures in the scoring column on Saturday, paced by Ferebee's 19 points. The senior was nearly 50% from the field, knocking down six of his 13 opportunities, with of those coming from distance.

Next in the scoring column was Josh Ivey, who missed a double-double by just one rebound. He led the Lakers on the glass with nine rebounds while cashing in 12 points. The other Laker with more than 10 points was Sanborn with 11. The freshman also helped on the defensive end tying for a game-high with three steals.

Tyler Pierre, Sanborn and Ferebee helped Ivey on the boards, each finishing with four apiece.

Oswego returns to the hardwood at 7:30 p.m. on Friday when it welcomes Potsdam to Max Ziel Gymnasium for conference action.
