Men's Basketball Suffers First Conference Loss to Cortland

Men's Basketball Suffers First Conference Loss to Cortland

The Oswego State men's basketball suffered its first conference loss of the season as it fell to Cortland at home on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, the Lakers celebrated Senior Day and recognized the senior class of Tyler PierreAllen Durutovic and Quinn Carey.

THE BASICS

  • Result: Cortland 72, Oswego 67
  • Location: Max Ziel Gymnasium, Laker Hall - Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records: Cortland 15-5 (9-4)  |  Oswego 17-3 (12-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oswego State got off to a fast start, going up 7-0 in the opening minutes and holding a 19-11 lead less than eight minutes into the tilt.
  • Quinn Carey knocked down three 3-pointers in the first half, two of them coming in the final three minutes to regain the lead for the Lakers, sending the home team to the break ahead, 35-33.
  • Just 8:30 into the second half, Pierre slammed home a two-handed dunk. He then followed that – on the very next possession – with a layup as he was fouled to put the Lakers up 49-44.
  • The game was tied at 51-51 before Cortland shifted the course of the game with an 18-3 run over 6:08 to assume a 67-54 advantage with four minutes remaining.
  • Oswego fought back down the stretch, cutting the deficit to four with 14.4 seconds left, as Pierre and Joe Sullivan scored back-to-back, traditional 3-point plays.
  • Cortland was able to withstand the late Laker push to hold on, 72-67.
  • The Lakers dominated on the boards, 41-27, with 17 of them coming offensively.
  • Pierre concluded with his fifth double-double of the season, totaling 21 points and 15 rebounds for the contest.
  • Liam Sanborn finished with 14 points to go with eight rebounds and eight assists.
  • Sullivan contributed with 11 points and six rebounds.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers look to rebound from only their third loss of the season when they head north next Friday for another conference matchup with Potsdam at 7:30 p.m.
