Pitching, miscues help Oswego State baseball down Oneonta 6-1

OS Baseball   Feeding off of a solid pitching performance and taking advantage its opportunities, the Oswego State baseball team (11-10, 4-4 SUNYAC) defeated Oneonta (9-16, 4-4), 6-1, Saturday afternoon, April 13.

The win stopped a four-game losing skid for the Lakers, who are in a tie for fifth place in the SUNYAC standings with 12 conference games remaining.

Following a quick 1-2-3 top of the first to start the game, the Lakers got on the board in the bottom of the frame after Alex Jurczynski (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.) took a 1-1 pitch to the opposite field, singling home Mike McMullen (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.).

Oswego State added three runs in the second as Michael Mascari (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) scored after a fielding error and Ed Charles (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) and Andrew Lazzaro (Sr., Oswego, N.Y.) came around to score unearned runs on another fielding error in the inning.

The Lakers plated two more runs in the seventh, building a 6-0 lead over the Red Dragons. Kyle Liner (So., Milford, N.Y.) ripped a single to left field on a 1-0 pitch plating Brian Hamilton (So., Liverpool, N.Y.), and Mike Stark (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) scored later in the inning on a fielder's choice.

An Oswego State fielding error allowed Oneonta its first run of the game off starter Dan Erne (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) in the eighth inning, but it was all the Red Dragons were able to put on the board.

Erne pitched a gem for the Lakers, pitching a complete game allowing one unearned run on two hits, while striking out six and walking one. He has not allowed an earned run in 24 straight innings, as his ERA on the season dropped to 1.69. Hamilton led Oswego State at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Oneonta's Steve Ascher suffered the loss on the mound after surrendering six runs over seven innings as giving up 10 hits.

Oswego State continues in Oneonta for a doubleheader Sunday, April 14, starting at noon. .
