Sanborn's 27 Points Helps Oswego Stay Perfect in SUNYAC Action

Sanborn's 27 Points Helps Oswego Stay Perfect in SUNYAC Action

The Oswego State men's basketball team completed the regular-season sweep of Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon to remain perfect in conference competition.

Oswego was powered by a career- and season-high 27 points from guard Liam Sanborn. The 16-2 start to the campaign is the best since the 1961-62 Lakers went 19-2 and won the SUNYAC Championship.

THE BASICS

  • Result: Oswego 81, Buffalo State 72
  • Location: Max Ziel Gymnasium – Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records:  Oswego 16-2 (11-0 SUNYAC)  |  Buffalo State 4-13 (2-9 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first half, with the game being tied at 14-14, the Lakers went on an elongated 22-9 run over 8:51 to hold a 12-point advantage at 35-23.
  • Buffalo State would never get closer than nine points the rest of the way, while Oswego pushed its lead to as many as 19.
  • Sanborn bested his 21-point career high from his freshman season and his 2018-19 campaign of 20 with the 27-point effort against the Bengals.
  • The sophomore shot was efficient from the field (7-for-13) and 3-point land (3-for-4) while cashing in 10 of his free-throw attempts.
  • Sanborn also aided his teammates with a game-high five assists while turning the Bengals over twice.
  • Three other Lakers joined Sanborn in double-figures, with Brandan Gartland closest behind with 18.
  • Senior Quinn Carey scored 12 points while Tyler Pierre had a double-double with 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and a team-high 10 rebounds.
  • Helping Pierre on the boards with multiple rebounds were Allen Durutovic (8), Gartland (7), Sanborn (6), Joe Sullivan (6) and Carey (4) and Bo Sireika (2).
  • The Lakers owned the glass by a plus-10 margin (47-37).
  • Oswego remained efficient on offense, shooting exactly 50% on the night while the Laker defense was stingy, holding the Bengals to sub-40% shooting (36.5%).
