The Oswego State wrestling team closed out its regular season at the NCAA Division Mideast Regional, hosted by Messiah College on Sunday. Oswego accumulated 26 points on the day, placing them 15th out of 18 squads at the regional. A pair of Lakers highlighted the event, both at different spectrums of their collegiate careers.
Senior Scott Bova had a stellar outing in the 184-pound weight class in his final competition as a Laker. A captain, Bova placed fifth in his group, scoring a team-high 13 points for the Lakers. After receiving a bye in the first championship round, Bova downed William Oberschelp of Washington and Jefferson by fall at 4:08. He then fell in the quarterfinal by a close 7-5 decision. Bova answered with a winning decision of his own, 11-4, over Nick Fisk of Rochester Institute of Technology. The Poughquag, N.Y. native then tallied a major decision, 9-1, against College of Mount St. Joseph's Tyler Ray. In the fifth place bout, Bova left nothing to chance, shutting out Baldwin Wallace University's Ben Lebrun 9-0 for a major decision.
Teammate Tyler Silverthorn, in his first collegiate regional, notched the next most points for the Lakers, claiming sixth place at 157 for 11 points. The freshman dominated his counterpart from Ohio Northern University in his first bout, taking a 14-3 major decision. Silverthorn lost his quarterfinal by 6-1 decision before rebounding with another major decision, this time 18-6 over RIT's Wonsik Kim. A Watertown, N.Y. native, Silverthorn then made quick work of Elizabethtown College's Chris Kummerer, registering a fall in just 55 seconds. That would be his last victory of the day for Silverthorn, losing back to back close decisions in the consolation semifinal (5-2) and the fifth place battle (4-3).
The remaining two Oswego team points came from 149-pound Mark Milisci and 133-pound Jon Ptacek, who each earned a point with decisions in their respective weight classes.
