Wendy Patrick, owner of House of Bloom Florals, has loved flowers since her girlhood.
About three years ago, she decided to take that passion and become serious about it by founding House of Bloom Florals in Hannibal.
“House of Bloom Florals has focused just on floristry so far,” Patrick told iHeart Oswego, “things like weddings, funerals, and holiday wreath-making workshops—the kinds of life events where you expect flowers.”
Patrick offers a wide range of incredible floral arrangements, including with her award-winning dahlias. “There aren’t any dahlia societies in Central New York,” Patrick told iHeart Oswego, “because there are very few growers in this area.” She’s in such a unique niche in CNY that Patrick must participate in shows put on by the Rochester Dahlia Society.
But now, the business is expanding. They are located in the downstairs of a multi-apartment building and have a newly furnished pottery studio that has just graduated its very first class. “We held a Valentine’s muddy pottery throwing class as well,” Patrick added. Open studio hours are available on a regular basis to graduates of her pottery classes.
More events and classes that marry the pottery studio (where students can throw their own vases for floral arrangements) and the floral side of the business are in the works. “We want to focus on making each offering an experience,” Patrick said. To accomplish this, Patrick spends a significant amount of time planning each event… and she’s already in the thick of planning for Mother’s Day.
“We’re holding a special event for Moms the Saturday before Mother’s Day,” Patrick told iHeart Oswego. Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 10th this year. “There will be mocktails, a treat buffet, an awesome selfie wall for photos, and a special gift for Moms.”
More details will be forthcoming on this unique event, which will feature a demo from a master potter in the on-site pottery studio. Tickets for the event will go on sale on EventBrite at $195.00 for Mom and a guest, with multiple starting times available from 10am to 4pm.
For those interested in joining a pottery class, the next 6-week course begins on March 22. Tuition is $335 and includes 25 pounds of clay, glazes, individual instruction, and use of the studio’s tools. Find these and other events here. “I’m happy to chat with anyone anytime [about pottery courses], even if they aren’t on our schedule,” Patrick said. “Anyone interested can give the studio a call or message the House of Bloom Florals Facebook page.”
There are additional plans to open a new retail area in the florist’s shop with custom-made vases, pottery, personalized items, magnets, and more. Patrick is also considering opening her dahlia beds to the public for photography and U-Pick later this summer.
